It’s Thursday again—that lovely hinge in the week when the hurry winds down and the hush
begins.

I’m in the Thursday of my life now, too. Things are slowing in that delicious way where
“no” comes more easily to the outside world and “yes” lands more often on my own soul. Every
Thursday I’m given, I thank God for another turn around the sun.
And this Thursday comes with an especially fitting label:
National Absurdity Day.
I’m always baffled by how these days get on the calendar, but I’m also a tiny bit grateful.
Absurdity is one of life’s great spices, after all. So today, let’s honor imagination in all its wild-child glory—the part of us that makes us laugh
and startles the bejeebers out of us at the same time.
Yesterday I had a full hour of drive-alone time. I love silence in the car unless I’m wrapped up in
an audiobook. News? Never. That’s the other kind of absurdity, the kind that wears trousers and
pumps and tries to run the world.
A quiet road, though, gives a woman time to visit with Me, Myself, and I. They are excellent
company. And yesterday, the three of us cooked up a plan:
A food truck.
A food truck celebrating aging me. (Anything but porridge.)

The concept?
Each day’s menu would offer a single, complete meal from the year 1957—my birth year.
Today’s special:
Tuna Casserole — featuring Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom
Perfection Salad — lemon Jell-O studded with cabbage, celery, and pimentos, served on
lettuce with a proud dollop of mayonnaise
Angel Food Cake — crowned with aerosol whipped cream and frozen strawberries
Drink — orange Tang

All this to say: imagination grows older with us. She’s always been my favorite
companion—faithful like Jesus, though far more absurd. But then, I’m made in the image of a
wonderfully creative God, so I suppose the whole package—dessert included—is a gift.
Tonight I’m making supper. The hubs will enjoy everything except the tomato aspic. That’s
just… no. Maybe the neighbor’s dog has more imagination for that than we do.
Stay tuned.

Old Souls:
"Mix a little foolishness with your serious plans. It is lovely to be silly at the right moment.” Horace

The Ancient of Days:
“We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy. And the other nations said, ‘What amazing things the Lord has done for them.’” Psalm 126:2

Norma Jean:
"Ideas, even the absurd ones, convince me
that I'm created in the image of God.
Humor is holy, too.

Thursday Chat: In the Thursday years of life, even a quiet drive can whip up a food truck, a 1957 menu, and a reminder that God gifts us creativity at every age.
