Welcome to Thursday — the best day for a good conversation.

Here we are again, stepping into the final third of our week, and I can’t help but hear Dr. Seuss whisper in my ear: “How did it get so late so soon?”

It sneaks up, doesn’t it? One minute you’re grinding the gears on your first stick shift, and the next you’re squinting at the dashboard wondering what half those warning lights mean. One moment you’re wandering Europe with a backpack, and the next you’re asking your six-year-old grandson why your phone screen is suddenly upside down.

Time isn’t a polite, predictable thing — it doesn’t stroll by at a leisurely pace. It rushes past like a river, carrying us forward while we’re still busy scanning the shoreline for treasure. And by the time we finally pause to look up, the afternoon sun has shifted, the shadows have stretched long, and we realize we’re further downstream than we ever imagined.

But here’s the gift of Thursday: the day is leaning toward evening, yes — but evening isn’t just an ending. It’s also the start of something beautiful. The final third of the week has its own color, its own hush, its own anticipation.

The same is true of life. The final third is teaching me that dying is still living. I’m not done until I’m done. There are still rocks to climb over and people to love and prayers to offer before I cross to that far shore. Until then, I intend to keep living — fully, fiercely, faithfully.

So today, I’ll keep my head up and my eyes open. I’ll watch the sun set without hurrying it. And I’ll give thanks for the God who made both the morning and the evening — and who calls every hour holy.

Big Brains:

“It is not how old you are, but how you are old.” Jules Renard

Old Souls: “It is not death that a man should fear but never beginning to live.” Marcus Aurelius

The Ancient of Days: “For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night.” Psalm 90:4 (ESV)

Norma Jean: “Today is my favorite day, just like tomorrow and yesterday.”

How are you spending your Thursday? I’m starting mine with a beautiful latte. Then … well, I guess I’ll do laundry because not everything in a Thursday can be extensional.

Thursday Chat: What one thing about being in the Thursday of life kinda freaks you out? I’ll go first: “The open prairie has narrowed into a laneway.”
